Dust off your old bag of scrabble tiles and get scoring…

Players: 2+

Equipment: Scrabble Letter Tiles

Game: Line up all the players and place the bag of letter tiles 30-40 yds away.  On go, each player completes 8 push-ups, 8 squats, and 8 sit-ups and then runs to the bag, grabs a tile, and runs back to repeat this process.  Players continue this process until someone has completed a three-letter word.  That person wins the round, and he or she is now challenged with completing a four-letter word next round.  You can have as many rounds as you like, with each round winner having their required letter threshold raised after each win.  Play as many rounds as fits your goal for the class.  I’ll often do superset rounds, with all exercises in a specific muscle group, followed by a new muscle group next round.

Pro-tip: Scrabble is known to cause to disputes about what is and is not a word.  Keep this website handy as your quick word-checker to settle disputes: https://scrabblewordfinder.org/dictionary-checker.  Also, you’ll want more than one game’s worth of tiles on hand if you have groups larger than 12-15 people – you will run out of tiles!  One workaround is to allow tile-trading instead of drawing new tiles.

Variations:

  • Dirty Scrabble: Same format as above but you play only one round and it goes until someone has spelled a “dirty” word.  Not for all groups :)
  • Name Game: Same as Dirty Scrabble above, but players are trying to complete the name of someone in the class.  Best for larger groups.
  • Egghead: Instead of requiring a minimum number of letters, require a word that is a minimum of 10 points in letter-value.  This can take a while depending on your group size so you may want to shorten the run/reps requirement.
