Tug of War

Tug of War

Tug of War is perhaps the best team-building game of all-time.  Usually results in high-fiving…Tug of war is not recommended for hard surfaces as players will often fall on the ground and even each other.

PLAYERS: 2 – 100

EQUIPMENT: Rope (needs to be long and thick), cones or markers, tape

GAME: Mark the center point of  your rope with tape.  Then mark a point equidistant from the center point on either side with tape, or use cones, equidistant from the center.  This is the “team line”.  Assign the teams, of equal size, to get in position at either end of the rope.  As soon as the referee blows the whistle, each team can start pulling the rope into their territory.

GOAL:  The objective of the game is for each team to pull the rope to their side. As soon as the center mark crosses past either team’s line, that team loses.

NOTES:

  • Lowering of elbow below the knee during a ‘pull’ – known as ‘Locking’ – is a foul
  • No touching the ground for extended periods of time
  • Encourage communication and cooperation or “rhythm” of team members
  • Encourage the person on the end for each team to act as the “anchorman”, who is able to wrap the rope around their shoulder.
